Challenges
The Maya civilization is not only known for their spectacular art, monumental architecture, and sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems, but also for being the first to develop the written language of the Americas. To discover the secrets of this complex society, the University of Jaén from Spain and San Carlos University from Guatemala mapped the known Maya sites of Yaxha, Nakum, and Naranjo, with the aim of finding unknown Maya settlements.
Our Solution
The team covered over 1900 ha, with just 7 corridor mapping missions, using Trinity F90+ and the high-speed scanning LiDAR scanner solution, Qube 240. The mission resulted in a precise 3D map of the already-known pyramids and the discovery of new smaller ruins and buildings, embedded underneath the dense vegetation. The excavation process began immediately. Archaeologists will use the data to gain a better understanding of the Maya culture, and plan new excavations, to protect Guatemala’s cultural treasure forever.
