WASP Weles Acoustic Sensor Payload

The WASP acoustic payload is designed for the Quantum-Systems Family of Systems. The system is capable of detecting and measuring the direction of arrival of impulsive sounds, such as artillery, mortars, and small arms fire. This enables increased situational awareness for forward observers. The WASP system is fully passive, ensuring stealthy operation.

Technical Specifications

WASP is a compact, self-contained module integrated into the Vector platform that provides real-time detection and localization of acoustic events, such as artillery fire, small arms fire, and mortar launches. The primary purpose of the system is to direct the observer towards the threat and/or to steer the UAV camera towards the detected event.

Detected acoustic events can be displayed in QBase Tactical or MOSAIC software for visualization. The system is powered directly by the platform’s onboard battery and includes wind protection for reliable performance during flight. The self-latching mechanism allows for easy assembly and replacement.

Under assumption that event of interest generates a shock wave.

**

Direction of arrival error is an average measured angular error to the origin of the acoustic wavefront, either to the muzzle blast or the shock wave. Note the shock wave can have different origin than the muzzle blast. The estimated direction refers to the respective acoustic source, not necessarily the shooter’s location.
