Operator Insight Series: Vector in Ukraine

We interviewed real operators of Vector in Ukraine to gain insights into how Vector is being utilized and the challenges they are facing. We have adapted and updated Vector based on frontline feedback received from Ukraine to deliver portable, AI-enabled ISR that operators can depend on. Read the interview below to learn how Vector is making a difference on the frontlines in Ukraine.

Q: Can you walk through a typical mission with Vector? What type of mission are you performing the most? Can you share a moment where the Vector proved critical to the success of a mission?

A: We are currently engaged in a position war. We use Vector to look for artillery, warehouses, vehicles, and ‘back line’ positions. It’s also used to patrol for incoming assault actions from the Russian side.

It’s extremely satisfying to have the visual confirmation of target destruction. The critical advantage that Vector brings is the camera. The Raptor payload is the best in class.

Q: What’s it like to operate in denied or GPS-contested environments with Vector?

A: These types of operations go back to WW2 or Vietnam when GPS didn’t exist. But in this new environment and with new technology like Vector, it’s much easier and more accurate for my generation.

Q: What features or capabilities make Vector stand out from other drones you’ve worked with?

A: Vector is the best aircraft in this class for many reasons. Its small footprint is one of them; you do not need a special [launch] field or catapult. The VTOL system is also unique and very useful.

Q: How does Vector’s ease of deployment impact your unit’s operations?

A: We use it 24/7 from a special position now. It has become critical to our operations with its ease of use and accurate information.

Q: How simple/or how difficult is Vector to learn when just getting started?

A: It’s easy to learn in a ‘green environment’ with a trainer and not in a real mission that is time critical. But in real combat action, I spend several weeks with each pilot in order to determine all the nuances.

Q: Have you integrated Vector with other systems (like ATAK, SitaWare, or other UAS)? What was that experience like? How has Vector changed how your team approaches missions compared to before?

A: There is a good connection between Vector’s software and Delta [battle management system]. We are able to share target information with other units immediately.
